You might as well eat the steak…

So lets talk about this Dani295229_528328633844311_319267487_nel’s Fast and the numerous other fasts that are  done at the beginning of each year.  Are you embarking on any?  If so, do you really know what fasting entails or are you simply going along with your church or other institution that has convinced you?  Fasting at the beginning of each year is popular.  Some folks fast from sweets,  caffeine, tea, internet usage, tv watching….basically anything that you feel you spend ALOT of time, money or effort with, should be eliminated during this time and your focus should be on putting God first!

Many churches put the Daniel Fast into play….The Daniel Fast is a biblically based partial fast. It is a method of fasting that men, women and young people all over the world are using as they enter into the spiritual discipline of prayer and fasting.

There are a couple of   scriptures for the Daniel Fast. In Daniel 1 the Prophet ate only vegetables (that would have included fruits) and drank only water. Then in Daniel 10 we read that the Prophet ate no meat nor any precious breads or foods and he drank no wine
for 21 days.So from these scriptures we get the guidelines for the fast:

1. Only fruits and vegetables 2. Only water for a beverage 3. No sweeteners, no breads

There you have it..so you ready? But wait its important to know exactly what you are seeking during fasting.  Say what?  Yeah, its important to be in expectation of God to do something for you during this time. So if you havent thought about that, then you might as well just eat…

So many folks are fasting because its popular or the “in” thing, not because they truly want to hear from God. It’s often evident by the many postings that occur on Facebook during that time..”I’m hungry” or “Wooo this fast is getting me”..Well perhaps if you were off in your prayer closet praying and seeking God, then this time of mediation may come just a tad bit easier.

I’m all for fasting for the right reasons, not just because its “time to do so.” For that matter, I no longer do it during the first weeks of January. I do it throughout the year while others are busy stuffing their faces.

It’s so important to know not only God for yourself, but every aspect of applying his word to your life! Education is powerful and fundamental to our growth and maturity in the word of God.  If you are just following the leader…you might as well eat the steak!
