The Old Testament Story of Ruth is a flawless love story. Ruth was a foreigner and a widow who followed her Mother In Law to a strange land. By her decision to remain faithful to God and Naomi, her whole life changed!
Naomi, Ruth’s Mother In Law had experienced tremendous loss…the loss of her husband and then the loss of her two sons, Mahlon and Chilion. Ruth was the widow of Chilion. This loss left Naomi and her two daughter in laws to the brink of ruin in Moab, a paganistic culture
After hearing that Israel’s drought was broken, Naomi decided to return back to Bethlehem. She encouraged her two daughter in laws to go back to their own families. Orpah kissed Naomi and left, but Ruth clung to Naomi, determined to stay with her, regardless of the personal cost
“Entreat me not to leave you, Or to turn back from following after you. For wherever you go, I will go. And wherever you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people. And your God, my God. Where you die, I will die. And there I will be buried. The Lord do so to me, and more also. If anything but death parts you and me.” Ruth 1:16-17
WOW! This was a commitment! a commitment to death. She totally forsoke it all to follow Naomi…
In agreeing to return to Bethlehem, Ruth was also agreeing to support the aging Naomi. Ruth immediately went to work in the fields, gleaning what the harvesters left behind in order to provide food for her and Naomi. She daily helped and supported her Mother in law. A task that did not go unnoticed from God. It was there that Boaz spotted her! Working!
When Ruth related the encounter to Naomi, she recognized Boaz as a distant relative and she also recognized the hand of God in the blessing! “Blessed be he of the Lord, who has not forsaken His kindness to the living and the dead” Naomi sized up the situation and instructed Ruth on what to do and Ruth followed her instructions to the tee!
You must read the whole love story in Ruth!
Boaz and Ruth were married and the Lord soon blessed them with a son. At the birth of this child, the women of Bethlehem gave a blessing to Naomi as well “Blessed be the Lord who has not left you this day …..and may his name be famous in Israel” His name was Obed, Ruth was David’s grandmother!
Ruth a seemingly ill fated Moabite woman , whose loyalty and faith had led her away from her own people and carried her as a stranger to Israel, became a mother in a royal line that would eventually produce the nation’s first great king. Most importantly the offspring would be the Messiah….Eve’s hoped for Deliverer!
Ruth was redeemed, brought into a position of great favor, endowed with riches and privilege, exalted to be the Redeemer’s own bride and loved by Him with the greatest affection . Just as Christ redeems and loves us!
Her love and devotion triumphed! God looks deep inside all of us. He truly knows our hearts. All that is good and worthwhile will come to us, but we must be patient and commit ourselves to doing what is right.
Paul wrote “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart” (Galatians 6:9). The fullness of God’s blessings may not come in this life, but the ultimate glory He has in store for us is beyond what we can humanly imagine (1 Corinthians 2:9).
Would you be willing to forsake all? Forsake all to follow Christ? or Are you still holding onto some things that are keeping you from walking in the abundance that God has for you? We can not be part time Christians, yet expect a fulltime commitment from God. We can not straddle the line of salvation, using it when it is convenient for us. When things are not going well and blessings are not chasing us down….perhaps we should check our commitment to God and his word.
Today, think about the commitment you have for Christ. Are you willing to risk everything, to include family? children? to follow Him? Are you totally devoted to Him….or does your actions show otherwise? Some of us have testimonies about what a total commitment to Christ looks like. God has truly worked miracles in our lives. I tell folks, no one can tell me about the God I serve. He has done too much for me to ever doubt him!
Make 2016, the year you totally become loyal to God. Make a total commitment to Christ and watch the difference manifest in your life!
