Genesis 21-22

Genesis 21-22
Issac is born to Sarah. It seems that Abraham is not in high spirits. Perhaps due to moral conscience? However Sarah is overjoyed…so much that jealousy creeps in again and she demands Hagar and Ishmael be sent away!
Both Abraham and Sarah are not at their best in this chapter
But here is kicker. God came through on his promise!!! Even when faith is at its lowest
Unfortunately our lack of faith and disobedience can cause a delay…yet Gods word is guaranteed!
We see Abraham’s faith at its height in Genesis 22 when he trust God enough to considering sacrificing his own son
Have you ever noticed that Abraham said “we will be back”
Our words mirror our hearts…our faith

Genesis 20-

Genesis 20
Here we go again!..
Abraham once again tries to pass Sarah off as his sister. The same sin he fell in in Genesis 12…You see how easy it is to slip back into old sinful habits??
But take note Sarah must have been one beautiful woman… Even in her older years..she was still desired by other men ..and still passing easily as Abrams sister! 🙂
….and she never said a word.
Whatever Abrams excuse…perhaps he thought he was sparing his family, feeling like all cities were just as wicked as Sodom and Gomorah._
So God has to intervene again
King Abimelech is warned in a dream..in fact God said He would strike him dead!! If he touched Sarah. Some situations are just that urgent and this one was. You see Sarah’s womb was going to bring forth the son of the promise!
Once again God has to rebuke Abraham
Abraham says the fear of God is not in this place….when actually the fear of God was not in Abraham! He even tries to blame God “When God called me to wander from fathers house”..and lastly he uses the old half truth of “Well indeed Sarah is my sister” Really?? Abraham knew he really had messed up..
If He really respected the Lord…his commandments, his promises and his protection He would not have placed his family in his own hands and trusted his own actions to keep his family together!

You noticed that Abraham had no problem accepting gifts from Abimelech when previously in Genesis 14, he refused gifts from a pagan king because he wanted no one to think a man had made him rich.
Sin compromises us. After a while it gets harder and harder for us to stand on our moral character.
So here is my question to you…
How many more excuses do you have for not trusting God with your situation!

Genesis 19-Don’t Look Back

Genesis 19
Don’t Look Back
Wow Sodom….And you thought your neighborhood was bad.
Sodom is nothing new…its all around us…and it will be just like this in the last days.
Luke 17:28-30 28 “Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; 29 “but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 “Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed.
Lots decision affected his whole family, and one of those decisions was not a good one wanting to give his daughters over to the perverted men of the city!
How could any father give his daughters to be taken by a mob of perverts, just to protect two strangers? Whatever Lot’s motives were, we see here an illustration of Sodom’s terrible wickedness — a wickedness so great that God had to destroy the entire city!
I often wonder why Lot was still hanging around the next morning?…..
Gen 19:15-16 15 When the morning dawned, the angels urged Lot to hurry, saying, “Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city.” 16 And while he lingered, the men took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the LORD being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city.

Sometimes when we get into a rut and God has to grab us by the hand and pull us out of where we are, because it’s just not good for us there anymore!.
They refused to listen to God’s word being spoken, or even listening to the authorities which Lot was. The people wanted to just live their own way because it was OK in their own eyes. Just like the world does today.
• Luke 17:30-33 (NLT) 30 Yes, it will be ‘business as usual’ right up to the hour when the Son of Man returns. 31 On that day a person outside the house must not go into the house to pack. A person in the field must not return to town. 32 Remember what happened to Lot’s wife! 33 Whoever clings to this life will lose it, and whoever loses this life will save it.
And there is Lots wife….She was not only still concerned with the people, but also her heart was towards them more so then the Lord. She allowed the things of this world to have precedent over her life rather then God. Lot’s wife was not only looking back, but the original wording indicates that she was going back to Sodom. She was doing what Jesus spoke about in Luke. Whoever clings to this life will lose it,
She was clinging to the things of this world!.
What’s so important in your life that you are willing to turn your back on God?
Maybe there is something or someone that has caused you to take your eye’s off of God and turn your back on Him.
Lot did not start out in Sodom and Gomorrah, but was in the surrounding cities slowly making his way towards Sodom and Gomorrah.
That’s how sin starts, it seems so innocent and we try to get as close to it as we can without being a part of it. But soon we find ourselves in the midst of it, just as Lot had.

So next time you wonder “How did I get into this mess?” or “How did I fall into this sin?” look back at your tracks and you will see how you played with sin, getting as close to it as you could until it over took you.
But through all this the scriptures says this about Lot.
• 2 Peter 2:7 and delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked
Lot was righteous. But Lot wasn’t righteous because of his lifestyle. But rather because of God’s grace.
And even though he was a righteous man, we see the result of the life style that Lot brought his family into….look at the issues that took place
Because Lot choose not only to live by Sodom, but in the city, the result was his wife desired the city, and the people, and turned to go back as God was destroying the city. The result of this was her death by being turned into a pillar of salt.
Second his son in laws did not believe him and made fun of him as he tried to warn them. The result once again was their death, being destroyed in the city.
Finally Lot’s daughters committed a sin by lying with their father Lot to have children. Remember the city of Sodom and Gomorrah were sexually perverse cities and it didn’t phase the girls of what they were doing with their father, since they probably heard and even knew of many people who did the same thing in the city. Some of them may have even been friends of theirs.
Your sin affects a lot more than just YOU! It impacts the generations to come…
But even through all this sin with Lot’s family God is still glorified through it all…..wow

But we forget that we can not earn our way into heaven, or even earn our gifts. They are all a free gift to those who ask. God is not someone who will give you something and take it back because you messed up.
We all mess up everyday, many times each day. We can’t base our salvation, service or love for the Lord and His love for us based on our actions. But rather we must base it on His undying love for us and His Son’s love for you!

Genesis 18

Genesis 18
God appears to Abraham. He receives three visitors and gracious Abraham recognizes and serves God
We all know the rest….the promise that Sarah would bear a child… the laugh on her part. Then she is called out on her unbelief
As these three man travel on to Sodom..Abraham petitions God about the number of righteous to be found and will he spare the city. Abram pleads on behalf of 10 people… Just ten…if only ten would be found…
As we continue to see the faithfulness and righteousness of people in Genesis. Their desire and love to intercede on the behalf of others
Here is my question to you. What is the thing that God promised you would come to pass? What did God manifest in your life that initially had you filled with doubt?
What have you overcome through faithfulness to God?

Genesis 17-When God Changes Your Name

0

Genesis 17
When God changes your name!!!
You see often God has to wait until we are ready, before he moves in our situation. Until HE alone receives the Glory…not us! Abram had waited on God a long time. Calculate his age from the time God first spoke to him, until this time…24 years had passed!
Remember where you were 24 years ago? What you were doing? Where your life was headed?
Abram was not a perfect man, but he was faithful. it was his faith in God, not his actions that made him blameless before God. Abram knew that without God he was nothing!
Abram may have messed up with Hagar, but did you notice that even though Abram was guilty of not being obedient to God, God never said, “You messed up big time Abram.”No God had made a promise to Abram despite his sinning. God has also made a promise to us as believers, that if we believe in His Son Jesus we shall be saved.
Then God changes his name. Look at the meaning of Abram and Abraham. God didn’t change Abrams name because he was perfect, it was because he was faithful!!! God makes all things new/. We don’t have to be perfect before God can use us…before we go to church…before we are used in the ministry. We just have to be ready and faithful!
Then God makes a covenant with Abram requiring the circumcision of all males
Circumcision was not only a shedding of the old flesh, but also a shedding of the old man.
Before this time, Abraham was like all other men in sense, and there had to be a symbol of the separation from the world and a clinging to the Lord and His covenant.
• Romans 2:25-29 (NLT) 25 The Jewish ceremony of circumcision is worth something only if you obey God’s law. But if you don’t obey God’s law, you are no better off than an uncircumcised Gentile. 26 And if the Gentiles obey God’s law, won’t God give them all the rights and honors of being his own people? 27 In fact, uncircumcised Gentiles who keep God’s law will be much better off than you Jews who are circumcised and know so much about God’s law but don’t obey it.
28 For you are not a true Jew just because you were born of Jewish parents or because you have gone through the Jewish ceremony of circumcision. 29 No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God. And true circumcision is not a cutting of the body but a change of heart produced by God’s Spirit. Whoever has that kind of change seeks praise from God, not from people.
Abraham believed God and had changed. With the change and God’s instruction to be separate from the world came the symbolism of circumcision. What shows your separation from the world? Can people tell there is a difference in you…or do you still do the old stuff you use to do?
• Col 2:11 (NLT) When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure. It was a spiritual procedure–the cutting away of your sinful nature.
Flesh is a symbol of sin and circumcision is a symbol of removing sin from your life.
Is there anything that you still need to circumcise that ties you to the world?

Genesis 16-Taking Matters in Our Own Hands

featured_hd_genesis16

Genesis 16
Taking matters in our own hands
Here comes Sarai with a game plan. She thinks she has it all figured out!
Gen 16:1-2 1 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. And she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar. 2 So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.”
And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.

God didn’t change His mind when He spoke the promise to Abram. But it seems that Sarai forgot, and it appears that Abram did to, because he heeded Sarai’s words. Abram listened to his wife more than God
We saw this also with Adam and Eve where Adam heeded the voice of his wife rather than God. Wow its so important for husbands to teach correctly, so when we as wives come to them with something that is not of God, they can say “Hon, lets wait on the Lord!!”
Also we see that Abram brought Egypt with him to the land that God wanted Abram to be in.
And she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar.
God told Abram to come out of Egypt..

He didn’t tell him to bring Egypt with him! Sound familiar

Sometimes when God brings us out of a sin, a relationship etc. We bring some of the baggage with us. Sometimes we bring folks with us from season to season…..and wonder why our situation is staying the same. Check your baggage! Are there some things and folks in there that youve brought with you?
God cant work a newness in you when you are still holding on to what God has already FREED YOU FROM!!!
The maidservant Hagar brought from Egypt was about to ruin Abram marriage…even causing attempted murder in Sarais heart!
Sarai was trying to “help God out”….
Satan tried to use Hagar to destroy God’s promise to Abram, and even more the promise of the Messiah, which would come through, not only Abram, but Sarai also.
Although Hagar ran away after Sarai treats her harshly, God spoke to her telling her to return to your mistress and submit yourself under her hand. God still had a plan. Little did Sarai know that her son, Ishmael would play an important part in what was to come!
Isnt it awesome, how God can use our mistakes and work the plan for our good. Even after we have been disobendient and took matters in our own hands!

Let God do what HE DOES BEST!

Genesis 15

Genesis 15
Belief vs Unbelief
Abram sure had a loooong day didnt he??
First Abram had to go save his nephew Lot, then Melchizedek came to him and blessed him, and finally the king of Sodom came to him wanting the people that Abram just saved!!
Have you ever had a day like that, where you start out with a battle and it ends with a temptation?
You work all day..all week…and someone says “Girl let’s go drink!!”. Ole dude you vowed not to talk to again.. calls you at your lonely moment…..
We have ALL been there…
The Lord let Abram know that He was STILL here with him. Abram was tired, surely frustrated and just like we all do. He begin to question and doubt God and the promise.Abram was like “Ok God its been a long time since this promise…Is it going to happen? How is it going to happen?”
Gen 15:2-3 (NLT) 2 But Abram replied, “O Sovereign LORD, what good are all your blessings when I don’t even have a son? Since I don’t have a son, Eliezer of Damascus, a servant in my household, will inherit all my wealth. 3 You have given me no children, so one of my servants will have to be my heir.”

Heres what we must do!.
Matt 6:33-34 33 “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
God, give me a wife or husband. God fix my marriage. God, I need a new job. God, I need a new car. God, give me…?
What is on your Christmas list for God?
When we continually ask we do the opposite of Matthew 6:33-34. We seek these things first, then the kingdom of God.
• Heb 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
• Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
When you sit in church or read this study, are you listening to someone talk or just reading words. Or are you hearing God speak to you?
God hasent put you on hold! The fact is that God started working in your life the day you were born and He’s not finished yet.
If you were to walk out to your car and try to start it, do you doubt that it would start?
We put more trust in our friends; the authority of this world, our teachers, and even our man made machines then God.
But if God says something in His word, we doubt it and study it to make sure it’s true, and then not really believe it until it comes to pass.
And even worse, after it does come to pass, we start to doubt whether God did it or not.

Wow..what a way to treat an all powerful God!!?
Know that God….is a man of his word!!
